About our base assets
International operations

Marathon Oil has a history of finding and producing oil and natural gas around the world. Our current international operations span Equatorial Guinea in West Africa, the U.K. North Sea, Libya and the Kurdistan region of Iraq.

Equatorial Guinea

With a regional office in Malabo, on Bioko Island, we’ve been active in E.G. since 2002. Marathon Oil operates the offshore Alba field, and we have equity interests in the Alba liquefied petroleum gas plant, Atlantic Methanol Production Co., and a liquefied natural gas production facility. Production averaged 112,000 net boed in 3Q 2017.

Over the years, we’ve initiated and participated in social responsibility initiatives addressing critical health, social, education and other issues in E.G.

We continue to work with our business partners, the E.G. government and international non-profit and research organizations on programs including:

  • Bioko Island Malaria Control Project (BIMCP), an innovative and successful approach to eradicating malaria
  • Education, training and development of Equatoguineans to work in our facilities
  • Efforts to improve maternal and infant health
  • Support for E.G.’s participation in the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI)

U.K. North Sea

We have a regional office in Aberdeen, Scotland, and our offshore Brae complex in the U.K. North Sea has been producing for more than 30 years. Marathon Oil’s U.K. production averaged 12,000 net boed in 3Q 2017.

We began initial planning and evaluation of decommissioning the Brae Area facilities in 2009. Through hard work and innovative thinking, Marathon Oil has extended the life of the Brae field significantly beyond initial projections. However, with the inevitable decline in reservoir performance, decommissioning is a natural step in the life cycle of an oil and gas field.

We also hold interests in two assets operated by other companies: the SAGE pipeline and the Foinaven field.

Libya

In the Sirte Basin of eastern Libya, we hold interests in assets located in the Waha concessions. Production averaged 23,000 net boed in 3Q 2017.

Kurdistan Region of Iraq

Marathon Oil has a 15% non-operated interest in the Atrush field, north-northwest of Erbil. First production was achieved in mid-2017.

Brae decommissioning

Through hard work and innovative thinking, we’ve extended the life of the Brae field significantly beyond initial projections. However, the inevitable decline in reservoir performance is a reality, and we’re currently working toward Brae decommissioning.
